Your Guide to Murrells Inlet & The Hammock Coast

Between the Marsh and the Sea

A curated guide to dining, golf, gardens, and quiet luxury within easy reach of Ocean Breeze.

The Marsh Walk

Description: A half-mile boardwalk threading along the saltmarsh, lined with seafood restaurants, live music, and waterfront bars. Sunset here is a ritual — order Lowcountry shrimp and grits, then watch the egrets settle in for the night. Distance: 8 minutes from Ocean Breeze Insider tip: Arrive by 5:30 PM in summer to catch the sunset and avoid the dinner rush.

Brookgreen Gardens

Description: 9,100 acres of sculpture gardens, a Lowcountry zoo, native wildlife preserves, and walking trails carved from a former 18th-century rice plantation. Home to the largest collection of figurative American sculpture in the country. Distance: 15 minutes south Insider tip: Don't miss "Nights of a Thousand Candles" if you're visiting in early December.

World-Class Golf

Description: The Grand Strand is home to over 80 courses, but a few stand above the rest: Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Mike Strantz-designed, perennially top 100), True Blue Plantation (equally celebrated), and Pawleys Plantation (Jack Nicklaus signature design with marsh views). Tee times available through our concierge. Distance: 15–20 minutes Insider tip: Book Caledonia at least 60 days out in peak season (April–May, October).

Huntington Beach Park

Description: 3,000 acres of pristine beach, marsh, and maritime forest just across the highway from Brookgreen. Walk the salt marsh boardwalk, climb Atalaya Castle (a 1930s Moorish-revival landmark), or simply walk the most uncrowded beach in the area. Distance: 12 minutes south Insider tip: $8 entry per adult — well worth it. Birders spot over 300 species here annually.

Murrells Inlet Marina

Description: Charter fishing for inshore redfish and flounder, or head offshore for mahi-mahi, king mackerel, and sailfish. Dolphin-watching cruises run twice daily and are reliably magical. Distance: 5 minutes Insider tip: Book offshore fishing 48+ hours ahead — popular trips fill quickly in summer.

Fresh-Off-The-Boat Seafood

Description: With a gourmet kitchen at Ocean Breeze, cooking in is one of the best parts of the stay. Lee's Inlet Kitchen Market and Inlet Crab House sell whatever the boats brought in that morning — local shrimp, soft-shell crab (in season), sea bass, grouper, oysters. Distance: 5 minutes Insider tip: Steam a pound of local shrimp with Old Bay, serve with butter and lemon — best meal of your trip.

Historic Pawleys Island

Description: "Arrogantly shabby" since 1709, Pawleys is one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast — and intentionally quiet. Stroll the four-mile barrier island past weathered cypress cottages and the famous Pelican Inn. Don't miss the Hammock Shop, where the original rope hammock was invented in 1889. Distance: 12 minutes south Insider tip: Park at the public access on Atlantic Avenue and walk north — it's the quietest stretch.

Memorable Dining

Description: A few destination meals worth the drive: Frank's Restaurant & Bar in Pawleys (upscale Southern in a 1930s gas station — reservations essential), Hot Fish Club (waterfront sunsets), Bovine's (wood-fired steaks and a serious wine list), and Lee's Inlet Kitchen for the most authentic Lowcountry shrimp & grits within an hour. Distance: 5–15 minutes Insider tip: Frank's books up two weeks ahead in season. Call as soon as you confirm your stay.

Atalaya Castle

Description: A 30-room Moorish-revival mansion built in 1931 as the winter home of philanthropists Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington (the same Huntingtons who founded Brookgreen). Self-guided tours wander through artist studios, courtyards, and a watch tower with ocean views. Strange, beautiful, and unlike anything else on the coast. Distance: 12 minutes (inside Huntington Beach State Park) Insider tip: The Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival each September fills the castle grounds with 100+ artisans..

For the Kids (and Grandkids)

Beyond the beach: Wild Water & Wheels (waterpark, 20 minutes north in Surfside), Ripley's Aquarium at Broadway at the Beach (25 minutes), the Murrells Inlet 2020 Veterans Pier (free fishing, no license required for kids under 16), and Garden City Pavilion Arcade for old-school boardwalk fun on rainy days.
Distance: 5–25 minutes Insider tip: The state park's Educational Center runs free kids' programs in summer — sea turtle talks, marsh walks, fishing clinics.

Stocking the House

Publix (Pawleys Island) is closest for a full grocery run — about 12 minutes south. Lowes Foods at Inlet Square Mall (5 minutes) has a solid wine and craft beer selection. For specialty items, The Fresh Market in Pawleys carries gourmet ingredients, prepared foods, and a great cheese counter. Costco is in Myrtle Beach (35 minutes north) if you're stocking for a large group.
Distance: 5–35 minutes Insider tip: Use Instacart from Publix or Lowes — delivered straight to Ocean Breeze before you arrive. We'll let in the delivery if needed.

Worth the Drive

Charleston (90 minutes south) — one of America's most beautiful cities, easily a full-day trip. Georgetown (35 minutes) — the third-oldest city in South Carolina, with a charming harborwalk and the Rice Museum. Hampton Plantation State Historic Site (45 minutes) — an 18th-century plantation home in a magnificent live-oak grove. Conway (35 minutes inland) — small Southern town on the Waccamaw River with great antiquing.
Distance: 35–90 minutes Insider tip: Charleston is a long but worthwhile day — leave by 8 AM, hit the City Market, do a carriage tour, eat lunch at Husk, walk Rainbow Row, and you're back by sunset.
